Role of Water Disinfection and Cleaning Services

The primary objectives of water disinfection and cleaning services are to eliminate harmful microorganisms and impurities. The purification of these harmful bacteria ensures that the water is safe for consumption and various other uses.

Maintaining clean water is just as important as disinfecting it and cleaning it in the first place. Without the proper solutions for maintenance, water will be unsafe to drink and not meet the standards required for sanitation and industrial applications.

Here at WaterCare Solutions, our professionals have in-depth knowledge and experience in the best practices to assess contamination levels in multiple different water sources. We select the best treatment methods and ensure that our water treatments are both efficient and effective.

The process of water disinfection and cleaning

We are experts in cleaning and disinfecting water tanks and storage tankers across the UK. We also provide disinfection and cleaning services for a wide range of industrial water systems and other applications. Here is a quick guide to cleaning and disinfecting water tanks. For information on our other cleaning processes, get in touch with us today.

Step one – Assess the type of tank:

First, we assess the type of tank that needs cleaning. Water tanks must be accessible and safe to clean, with no sharp corners that can hold debris and prevent the removal of food deposits. Water tanks must also be fitted with lockable access points.

Step two – Cleaning and emptying the tank:

The next step involves emptying the tank of its water contents. We drain out any remaining liquid using the outlet valve or tap, and collect the water so it can be safely disposed of. Once emptied, we use our specialised equipment to provide a deep clean of the tank, ensuring all internal surfaces are free of debris.

Step three – Disinfection:

We can disinfect tanks using multiple methods and solutions, however, the most common way to disinfect water tanks is through chlorination. We calculate the required amount needed for each sized tank. We then provide an extra deep clean to ensure that no small amounts of the original liquid remain, as to not contaminate or leave a bad taste to the replacement water. We use high-pressure hoses that flush the tank of chlorine or other detergents used.

The pumps, pipes, and hoses of the water tanks will go through the same process.

Step four – Disposing of the liquid waste:

We ensure all wastewater is disposed of legally and correctly. We dispose of wastewater into a sewer network with authorisation following all health and safety regulations.

Your tank can now be refilled with clean water.

Regulatory Compliance

WaterCare Solutions understands the importance of following all regulatory compliance and health and safety measure when performing our water cleaning and disinfection services. There are several key regulations and guidelines that we follow, including:

  • The Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2016 (England)
  • Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI)
  • Environment Agency and Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA)
  • The Private Water Supplies Regulations 2009
  • Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP)
  • Legionella Control

Adherence to these regulations and guidelines ensures that our water disinfection and cleaning processes meet the highest safety and quality standards.

Using the proper disinfectant solutions is an ideal way to disinfect your home water system. Some of the most common and effective disinfectants to use are chlorine, or chlorine-based products such as sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite or your standard household bleach.

These disinfectants kill harmful bacteria and viruses that can form in water systems, and low levels or small amounts of chlorine-based products are not harmful to human health. The process to disinfect your home water system is as follows:

Throttle back the mains water supply at the stop cock and inject chlorine or other suitable disinfectant into the pipework at the stop cock and pull through to all outlets to achieve (if using chlorine) >50 ppm and maintain for one hour or the recommended time according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Then flush the system until the disinfectant is gone, and finally turn back on your water supply.

The best water disinfection method is chlorination or using a chlorine-based solution. Chlorination rids water of many different microorganisms, viruses, and bacteria, as well as improves the water’s taste and clarity. Chlorination is beneficial for water treatment and disinfection because it can be scaled to fit any type and size of system.

It is important to understand that chlorine gas is highly toxic and must be handled carefully. The amount of chlorine being used must be strictly monitored as well as the way it is stored. Unfortunately, chlorine won’t kill organisms such as Giardia or Cryptosporidium, so it is important to consult with a water treatment specialist, such as WaterCare Solutions for more information on the best way to disinfect water.

The most effective process to get rid of bacteria in your water pipes is as follows:

  • Flush your taps by first running cold water for two minutes and then repeat the process for hot water.
  • Prepare your disinfection solution - chlorine bleach is a typically good one to use Inject into the system pipework at the stop cock.
  • The solution now must sit in the pipes for at least 1 hr@>50ppm to effectively destroy as much bacteria as possible.
  • After the recommended time to allow the solution to sit, you must now repeat the first process and flush your water system by running your taps until the smell and taste of chlorine are gone or neutralise with AquaSafe WCS TS.

Getting rid of bacteria in your pipes is not a one-and-done process. It is crucial to maintain your pipes regularly to remove bacteria, dirt, debris, and other impurities. While most drains can be disinfected.
