What Does Our Risk Assessment Process Involve?
Our water risk assessments are designed to provide a comprehensive overview of your entire water system, including all assets utilising water such as cooling towers, tanks, and chlorifiers, determine the existing condition, as well as identify any potential issues such as bacterial growth.
Once completed, your risk assessment will also determine steps for keeping your system safe and compliant with legislation such as HSG274 and ACOP L8 and which industrial water treatment services may be required.
1. Identify all assets and map the different parts of your water system, looking for potential hazards
2. Produce a detailed schematic drawing
3. Produce a responsibility structure with defined roles for upholding the health and compliance of your water system
4. Devise a written plan to reduce and manage risks in the long term
5. Advise on, and provide access to, onsite or external training required for carrying out the allocated tasks
6. Risk assessments are regularly reviewed based on risk and after any significant changes to the water systems.
Who Is Legally Required To Carry Out A Water Risk Assessment?
All industrial and commercial water systems require risk assessments. Even if you believe that your system is low risk, it will still need to be assessed by a competent person. The importance of risk assessments for legionella control and general health and safety cannot be understated, let alone the potential legal ramifications of failing to comply with HSE guidelines.
When Should a Water Risk Assessment be Reviewed?
Water risk assessments should be reviewed based on risk level:
- High risk - healthcare premises or sites with vulnerable people
- Medium risk - normal commercial premises
- Low risk - premises with minimal water facilities, such as a small shop
However, it’s also necessary to review water risk assessments after any significant changes to your water system, as these can render the previous assessment void.
How Often Should a Risk Assessment Be Carried Out
The frequency for a water risk assessment depends directly on the level of risk identified for the site. For high risk systems, annual assessments are recommended. Medium risk premises should have an assessment every two to three years. For low risk systems, a review every five years is generally appropriate.
